Know your rights
Knowing the rules protects you as much as it protects everyone else. Many drivers feel nervous when a traffic officer waves them down, mostly because they are not sure what is expected of them or what they are entitled to.
When an officer signals you to stop, pull over safely and stay calm. You must carry your driving licence when you drive and show it when an officer asks for it. You may ask to see the officer's identification. Never offer or pay a bribe. It is a crime for both sides and it keeps dangerous drivers on our roads. You can report corruption to the National Traffic Call Centre on 0861 762 847.
If you or your child is learning to drive, a learner's licence for a light motor vehicle is open from age 17 and is valid for 24 months. While you learn, you may only drive with someone next to you who holds a driving licence for that type of vehicle. Teaching your child to drive is also a good time to check your own habits, because they will copy the way you drive, good and bad.
