Car crime on the road
Sadly, in South Africa road safety is about more than how people drive. Hijackings and smash-and-grabs are a real risk, especially at traffic lights, in slow queues and when you turn into your own driveway. Most of us know someone who has been through it.
A few habits lower the risk. Keep your doors locked and windows up, and keep handbags, laptops and phones out of sight, ideally in the boot before you leave. When you stop, leave enough space to the car in front so you can pull away if something feels wrong. Be extra alert when you arrive home, and if you think someone is following you, don't turn into your driveway. Drive on to a police station or a busy, well-lit place.
If you are hijacked, remember that no car is worth your life. Don't argue or resist, keep your hands where the hijackers can see them and move slowly. If a child is in the car, tell them calmly. Get away as soon as you can and call SAPS on 10111.
