How to report a taxi driver in South Africa

A taxi swinging across three lanes to reach a stop, or halting in the middle of the road to load, is something most of us have seen. Reporting a taxi works the same way as reporting any other vehicle.

The short answer

  1. Stay safe

Do not film or type while driving. Wait until you are stopped.

  2. Note the taxi's number plate

Write down the plate, the road, the time and what the driver did. If you can see the route or the rank, note that too.

  3. Report it on Padvark

Add a photo or video if you have one, and pick the offence that fits best.

  4. Report it to the RTMC yourself

Use the WhatsApp button on your Padvark report, or phone the NTCC. Padvark does not send it for you.

If someone is in danger right now, call 10111 (police) or 112 from a cell phone.

What to note about a taxi

The number plate comes first, from the back if you can see it safely. After that, write down where it happened (the road name, the intersection or the rank) and the time.

If the route or rank is written on the taxi, or you can see where it was loading, add that. Typical things to report are stopping in the road to load or offload, driving in the yellow lane or on the shoulder, and going through a red robot.

Be fair in what you write. Say what the taxi did, such as pulling off without looking or stopping across two lanes, and leave out guesses about the driver or what the taxi industry is like. A calm, factual report is easier for a moderator to approve and for the RTMC to read.

Who to report to

The RTMC is the channel Padvark points to. We do not list taxi association numbers, because we cannot check that they are correct or that anyone answers.

Common questions

Which number plate should I note for a taxi?
The one you can read clearly. The back plate is usually easiest to photograph safely. If you can get both front and back, even better.
Does the taxi association get my report?
No. Padvark does not send reports to any association, company, the police or the RTMC. You report to the RTMC yourself.
What if the taxi stopped in the road to load passengers?
Pick the closest offence from the list, describe what you saw, and note exactly where it happened. A photo of the taxi in the road helps.
Should I say something to the driver?
No. Let it go and report it afterwards. Arguing with a driver can turn an annoying moment into a dangerous one.

Ready to report?

It takes a few minutes. Add the number plate, the place and the time, plus a photo or video if you have one.
